The author writes to Americans to discuss the deeper meaning behind Trump's Muslim ban and his plans for the wall. He infers that trump is simply afraid of people who don't share the same cultural aspects and nationality as him. This column is effective in using tone throughout its entirety. When Brooks' says " guaranteed to mobilize terrorists" he uses a patronizing tone. He chastises Trump for letting his fear towards non-Americans guide him in his presidency. He also compares Trump's cowardice to Ronald Reagan's courage in the column. Brooks' believes trump is "Afraid of Mexican competition" and is letting his fear of the Mexicans exceeding in the United States guide his bias mind. The author scolds trump for being so incompetent that he would deny a human being, refuge in America because of his own bias opinions.

David Brooks in “ The Politics of Cowardice” claims that american’s fear things that they don’t understand. Brooks supports his claim by first stating how no Syrian american has committed any terroristic acts in America yet, trump only is letting his biases control his actions. He then goes on to say Trump’s only solution to his fear is to build a wall around “illegal” aliens. Lastly the author states that Trump’s cowardice will have america isolated from every other country because, he simply fears terrorism. Brooks purpose is to inform Americans that trump has no valid reason for his ban so that they know he is following his biases. The author writes in a Sarcastic yet, condemnatory tone for Americans. This is significant because it shows how Trump is only acting on his fears.
